Murphy beds come in all sizes, shapes, and styles, however, the basic configuration of a Murphy Bed  is one that folds up into an enclosure thus giving you more space in the room when the bed is up. A bed such as the one illustrated above can easily be made in a week end providing you have all of the materials on hand to construct the bed.

There are four main components that make up the murphy bed, the Enclosure Cabinet, the Mattress Frame, the Lifting Mechanism, and the Legs. The Enclosure Cabinet, Mattress Frame and Legs can all be made from the wood of your choice. The Lifting Mechanism hardware can be purchased on line at a variety of locations.

A good place to start your project is with a bed size chart such as the one shown below:

Using this chart you will be able to establish a base for the inside dimension of your Mattress Frame.  Make sure you have your mattress on hand so that you can  allow for additional space as required for the mattress to fit. Once the Mattress Frame is constructed, you can move on to the Cabinet Frame. Again, you will have to leave additional space between the Mattress Frame and the Cabinet Frame to accommodate the pivot hardware as well as the lift mechanism depending on the type used.

Cabinet Frames can be a separate piece of furniture that is finished on the front and pulls down to reveal the bed. They can also include additional units on either side of the bed or it could be as simple as a unit that is built into the wall such as an existing closet where you would open bi-fold doors to pull the bed down.
